Varanasi is home to many famous temples and mosques, but its the Ghats of Varanasi that draw thousands of tourists each year. Ghats are long, stone steps that gently sink into the river. The ghats are almost 100 in number, and are used for various purposes, like bathing, cremations, swimming, prayers, boating, etc. The ghats were constructed during the reign of the Maratha dynasty, around the 18th century. Some of them are more famous and popular than most.
